Magic Guild Lectures

Charlie* is happy to present his popular lecture, Primary Magic, to magic societies in England.

See below for a brief description of the lecture as well as some comments from those who have experienced it:

PRIMARY MAGIC:
Making a Living Doing Educational School Programmes

This entertaining lecture offers practical ideas on how to make a living as an educational magician. Charlie has been performing magic for over 20 years, and it has been his full-time career for the past 18 years. He averages 400+ shows annually and still has over two months off for holidays (if he chooses not to work other venues!).

If you want to learn the secrets to making educational magic your career, including marketing tips, promotion, and ways to develop your own niche market, then this lecture is for you. Charlie specialises in educational school programmes. His lecture will include not only children’s magic but will also give you ideas on how to change standard magic props into educational tools.

*Featured lecturer on children’s magic at International Magic Week 2006 in Tyneside

Comments About PRIMARY MAGIC:

Charlie the Magician may be a new name to many, but visit pretty much any school throughout the UK and I will bet that at some point they have booked him for one of his numerous educational magic shows.

And it was 'Educational Magic' that would be the focus of tonight's presentation, or more to point, how to make a living doing Educational Magic. Charlie's lecture had two big things going for it that many others don't; firstly, he taught all that attended exactly what we had come to see and secondly, he was a very likeable and genuinely nice man. You have to be, really, when working with kids, as they can see straight through the 'BS' as easily as they can your latest purchase from a magic dealer!

The night covered every single aspect of Educational Magic, including the all-important business side of things, something many of today's performers completely forget about. (Remember, it is Show BUSINESS.)

Some great commercial routines followed, many of which could easily be fitted into any branch of magic - not just Educational.

At the end of the evening we had a chance to buy some very well-produced lecture notes; to call them lecture notes does them an injustice, to be honest, especially when you think his entire life's work is within those pages.

So there you have it, one of the best lecture/talks/presentations/seminars you could wish to come across in the specialised field of How to Make Money Doing Educational Magic.

Why one of the best? He actually tells you how to do it!

If you get a chance to see Charlie, do so…other than that, contact him for a copy of his Primary Magic notes.

-- F.Wilkinson, President of the Nottingham Guild of Magicians

I am writing on behalf of the Nottingham Guild of Magicians to extend our very grateful thanks to you for the lecture you gave to our members. Everyone agreed this was an excellent lecture which gave a well- informed insight into both the construction and value of an education show for use in schools. The information you are willing to share with your fellow magicians is vast and any individual who has a particular interest in this field would do well to ensure they take the time to see your lecture. Even our members who do not directly perform this style of magic agreed the evening had been entertaining and had picked up at least one aspect which they could utilise in their own area of performing.

-- A. Morrison, Nottingham Guild of Magicians

I wanted to say a big and sincere thank you for making the South Tyneside International Magic Festival week such an overwhelming success. I have lost count of the number of emails, letters and direct comments of appreciation from the schools, overawed with your conduct and performances.

In addition, I would like to thank you for your contribution at the VIP reception. The positive feedback from the artistes has made an impact with regard to the Directors; they are now viewing the possibility of mainstreaming the event within the council's events diary. The whole event has lifted, inspired and enthused people, as well as being a wonderful boost to the profile of South Tyneside.

-- K. Prinn, Events and Operations, South Tyneside Council

I attended your lecture at Winchester a few weeks ago and I met you briefly afterwards. It was a great show and I applaud you for using magical performance in such a positive way - definitely made me think not only about what I do but also the opportunities that exist with such an approach.

-- J. Druce, Member, Winchester Magical Society

On behalf of the Winchester Magical Society I would like to personally thank you for coming down to Winchester to do an absolutely superb lecture! I can tell you that a lot of members have been commenting on how much they enjoyed your insights into performing educational programs in schools. Several members including myself have started to build cases on stands. Thank you for taking the time to send me the extra information on how to put them together. I do hope you don't mind but I am going to put together a file that can be shared with our members on how to do it. Your advice on that alone was just one of the many highlights of the lecture. At the recent I.B.M. Convention in Eastbourne I recommended you to several others I know involved in other magic societies and clubs, so hopefully you'll be able to get your wonderful lecture and message out to…other societies. …you showed us how to turn simple tricks we already own into gold mines when it comes to performing in the school show educational market.

As the President of the society I can tell you that if you do come up with another lecture in the near future we would not hesitate to have you back! One of our members already had your lecture notes before coming to see the lecture and told me how grateful he was to actually hear you talk about a subject that is so often overlooked in magic lectures. It's not so much about the tricks you do, it's about the overall substance and entertainment. Your lecture was for me one of the highlights of our year! I'd be happy to talk to [potential bookers] and recommend you! Thanks again for a wonderful evening.
